Plump Blossom has been a controversial film. It received criticism for its use of AI, but beyond the controversy, is the movie actually good? Let’s talk about it.
Plump Blossom is the first AI-assisted Filipino film from an independent company. So the question is: despite its use of AI, was it able to tell a story with heart, particularly about self-acceptance, love, and, of course, food?

Plump Blossom and Its AI-Assisted Animation
While watching Plump Blossom, my first impression was that it felt like watching a usual animated film.
There are a few obvious scenes where the original-looking elements seem inconsistent, but they are relatively few. There are also some moments where the lip movements don’t quite match the dialogue.
But despite that, I fell in love with Princess Ruo Hua in this film. She’s just so cute. She’s chubby, loves to eat, and is a loving daughter.
A Story About Beauty and Self-Acceptance
Set in a fictional Tang Dynasty-inspired setting, the film presents a different perception of being chubby. A fuller body can be associated with wealth because it suggests that a person has enough food, while a round face can be associated with good fortune.
And I think that is one of the story’s main messages: beauty comes in all sizes, and what matters most is the beauty of the heart. For me, the film successfully gets that message across.
Princess Ruo Hua and General Jian’s Love Story
The love story between Princess Ruo Hua and General Jian is also central to the film. Their relationship is very wholesome, but it isn’t shallow.
What makes their romance interesting is that it isn’t simply based on physical attraction. It is also about loyalty and their willingness to serve and help others.
Both characters have a strong sense of service, and that is one of the things I liked about them.
That’s also why I found myself getting nervous while watching. I kept wondering what would happen to General Jian when he went to war.
The Songs and Voice Acting
I also enjoyed the songs in the film. They have a Disney-inspired feel, and for me, the movie manages to achieve that atmosphere.
My only issue is that some of the songs feel a little too long. I think they could have been shorter to keep the story moving at a smoother pace.
When it comes to the voice acting, you might not even guess that the voice actors are Filipino, especially Candice Tan. Her voice is sweet and fits Princess Ruo Hua very well.
My Overall Plump Blossom Review
Overall, I enjoyed watching Plump Blossom. It’s a very wholesome movie with a clear message, and I think the story successfully delivers its themes of self-acceptance, love, and looking beyond physical appearance.
And honestly, it’s surprisingly mouthwatering to watch. 😂
